Shifting the Story: What to Do When Your Inner Voice Turns Critical

Amy Brothwell-White

We all have an inner narrator.

Sometimes she cheers you on with warmth and courage.

But other times? She can be quietly cruel.

She questions your worth. She whispers doubts. She turns the volume up on every mistake you’ve ever made.

If this sounds familiar, you're not alone. And more importantly: you're not broken.

Where Does the Critical Voice Come From?

Your inner critic is often shaped by:

  • Past experiences and expectations
  • Childhood dynamics
  • Cultural messaging about success, beauty, ageing or motherhood
  • Burnout, hormones, or even a change in identity

It’s not the voice of truth — it’s the voice of protection. A part of you trying (imperfectly) to keep you safe.

But growth doesn't live in fear. It lives in self-compassion.

3 Gentle Ways to Shift Your Inner Dialogue

1. Catch the thought, then soften it
When your inner voice says, "I'm not good enough," try adding:

"...and I'm learning to believe I am."

This isn't fake positivity. It's a bridge between fear and truth.

2. Ask: Would I speak to someone I love this way?
Often, the things we say to ourselves we’d never dream of saying to a friend. You deserve the same grace.

3. Invite a new voice in
Create a simple phrase that brings you back to centre. Something like:
"I am safe to take up space."
"I am allowed to grow at my own pace."
"I trust my timing."

Repeat it daily. Let it settle.

Healing Takes Time — But You Deserve to Hear Yourself Clearly

You don’t need to silence your inner critic completely. You just need to listen to yourself differently.

Confidence isn't a loud voice.

It's the quiet knowing that you're enough.

If you're ready to rewrite the story you're telling yourself, you don’t have to do it alone.
